Baby Makes Too Much Mess: Organizing Mom

Yes I know this is a baby blog but that baby wouldn’t be here or thriving if it wasn’t for mom right? Ever look at your house since your baby was born and think what the heck happened? I do almost everyday. But there’s only so much you can do these days. I have learned over the months a few tricks for keeping things a little less chaotic.

Use empty diaper boxes as temporary nursery storage. I have a box for coat hangers and one for items that no longer fit the baby. This way, his clothes come off the hanger onto him, into the laundry or the donation box and the hangers stay safely in one area until I need them.

Get yourself a mommy chest. Mine is a footstool that holds magazines and the like. If I want to keep something safe but accessible it goes in here. Baby Nik doesn’t even know that it opens. It’s a good place for bills, to do lists, cookies and hand lotion. Babies are into everything and having a safe place to keep essentials is a major stress reliever. You won’t be digging through the mess to find what you really need.

For everything you bring into your house take something out. This one took me a couple of months to figure out but it will save you a lot of mess and mayhem. Every time you come home with a new bag of clothes, toys or books for baby get rid of the same amount. Whether you place them in the garage or basement storage or simply take to the donation center, keep a balance. If not you’ll turn around one day and find yourself crushed beneath a pile of old broken toys, chewed board books and teeny weenie stained clothes.

Use cheap laundry baskets for quick clean ups. If you still vacuum and polish everyday, I’m happy for you. The rest of us just have time for quick clean ups. Place toys, magazines and floor debris in laundry baskets in the corner of the room as the day goes by. This helps keep the space clear for your little one and gives the impression of reasonably clean to any unexpected guests. After baby is in bed, you can empty the baskets and put things away. You could even vacuum if you can keep your eyes open.

Invest a few pennies in antibacterial wipes. I know they aren’t the best solution for the planet but they are the best solution for busy moms. As are reusing plastic bags from the grocery store for dirty diapers. I keep both a packet of wipes and a stash of bags in every room for easy access.

Being a mom is hard work so don’t make it harder on yourself. I’ve learned over the last few months that you simply can’t do everything so just do what you can as best as you can.

Your baby will thank you for it.
