So many parents have told me my passive potty training technique is not an option but it seems to be working, very very slowly. My technique has been to provide Nik with all the information and tools he needs to get the job done and leave him to it. Its been a sporadic journey but I think the tide is slowly turning.
In the last two weeks Nik has used the potty twice and tried to use it at least once a day. He keeps saying its not working i.e. nothing is ending up in the potty, but it is. He gets frustrated when he can’t get his potty chair assembled properly and finds it hard to just sit and read on the potty like the books say but things are getting better.
The main problem I have seen with my totally made up passive technique is Nik is in charge of the process and sometimes he doesn’t share with mommy what’s going on. Sometimes he goes into his room for a few minutes, comes out looking the same as he went in but unbeknownst to me he has taken his diaper off and replaced it with nothing.
Another issue is Nik changing his traditional diaper for a pull up diaper and leaving diapers clean and dirty all over the house. Nik also isn’t too good at letting me know he has to potty before he goes which can result in some timing and aim issues.
But we are getting there. I think this independent approach may have more setbacks than other potty training techniques but in the end my son will have gone from diapers to using the toilet without any help. It can only increase his self reliance and independent spirit. Well, that’s the idea. He’s in there now attaching his potty to the big potty. I’m anxious to see what happens next.
