Teething Trouble Takes on a New Form: Baby’s Teeth Make Him Angry

Its not like my son just started teething. In fact, baby Nik at 18 months is working on his last four baby teeth. They came in and went out again and now they are all coming in at once, two at the top and two at the bottom. His teething has taken a whole new turn though with a new symptom of angry biting.

A lot of my friends with babies younger or even the same age as Nik have mentioned to me that their child is a biter or has bitten them on occasion. This was never the case with Nik and it’s not the case now. In fact, Nik has sudden urges to bite things and it’s been quote a mix from the cat sleeping bed, the couch and the door handle of the refrigerator to his crib, the kitchen table and his board books.

Rather than think my baby boy is hitting the toddler biting phase early I think his biting is a sign of his teething. He was never one for the teething ring. I tried every type of teething ring on the market in the hopes that one of them would suit his needs but he would never use one. His teeth came in over the last year and we have used rocking and calming mixed with teething medication to handle it.

But this angry biting phenomenon is a little more difficult to deal with.

These last teeth are coming in at the same time as baby Nik is learning to explore and attempt to control his emotions. He goes from a happy go lucky boy one minute to a child on the floor screaming in an explosive tantrum. When he starts biting the furniture, he growls. Yes, it’s a tad disturbing. Like most adults I have no memory of teething but my baby seems to be really struggling.

All I have managed to find them soothes him is the numbing gel. I don’t know how much it helps the teeth eruption but it certainly distracts him from taken a chunk out of his baby library.

So what am I saying? Be prepared. Once you recognize and learn how to treat your baby’s teething symptoms they may change and you’ll have to start all over again from scratch. Nik has been struggling with these last four teeth for a couple of weeks now and I am as anxious as him for them to fully cut through his gums.

I mean, the furniture can’t take much more and we’re thinking of treating the cat for ptsd.
