When you are a new mommy, it is so easy to get caught up in the routine of your job and all its responsibilities. I have discovered the best way for me to get 15 minutes of relaxation and remember to appreciate why I do it all. Here’s my advice: sit down, grab a coffee and watch your baby play.
Watching a child play is very therapeutic. Their happiness and joy at the simplest things is a great way for observers to unwind. I always worry about people who seem annoyed when children are playing and having fun don’t you? Spending my coffee breaks watching baby Nik is one of my joys of parenthood.
Baby Nik is an investigative player; he likes to explore his toys rather than play with them. He takes things apart, turns them over and over, balances them on top of other toys, strikes the surface of different toys together, weighs them, sniffs them , licks them, it’s a strange but amusing process to watch. When he’s not exploring his toys, Nik is exploring everything else.
He keeps wandering over to the coffee table and picking up my magazine. It’s a pretty academic journal devoid of pictures and advertisements, just essay after essay on current events. Yet he still insists on flipping through it over and over again. He peers at the pages, dense with text and I watch as he tries to make sense of it. He refuses to give up on it. I know he’ll try again later. Think he’s read more of it than I have.
Baby Nik has finally noticed that I’m watching him. He smiles and wanders over to me, indicating I should lift him onto the chair with me. I stop typing and lift my cutie off the floor. He says over and over: “mama mine, my mama, mama mine.”
Coffee break over but no worries. Geez I love my kid so much. Sometimes parenthood is the best feeling in the world.
