Being Pregnant With a Two Year Old

The last few days have been pretty exhausting. As I enter my second trimester I can’t believe how tired I still am. Of course you get tired easily in those first weeks after conception; you are building a factory, but this should be my easy pregnancy time. So why am I so tired? Well to mothers of more than one child the answer is obvious: there’s a two year old running around my house.

Nik has been my baby boy for nearly three years and it seems he’s not giving up the role easily. We have made some progress in potty use and taking care of himself but nothing seems permanent. One day Nik is using the potty telling me he’s a big boy and the next day he’s crying for a diaper because he’s still a “goo” (baby). Its tiring just trying to keep up.

Of course Nik knows I am pregnant, he’s heard the baby’s heartbeat and even seen a few sonogram pictures. He’s helped me sort out clothes, books and toys for his “brother.” And most days he seems excited to have a new friend on the way. But then other days he is clinging on to baby status with all his strength.

Besides being tired trying to keep up with Nik’s mood swings, keeping up with him physically isn’t fun either. Chasing him down, lifting him into my truck, putting him in the bath, on the diaper table and helping him out of bed have become major chores. Suddenly my child seems to weigh 60 instead of 30 pounds.

I’m falling asleep as I write this blog and we’ve only been out of bed for two hours. Unfortunately Nik stopped taking naps about three weeks ago so there is no hope of an afternoon break. Well I guess its back to getting as much done as I can before its 9PM and I pass out on the couch.

No-one ever said second pregnancies were easy. And if they did I beg to differ.
