It never stops. My son is a giggler. Everything is funny. And, if something isn’t funny he’ll find a way to make it so. This can be very frustrating for mom but it is something I have never seen to this extent in any other infant. So the question becomes am I raising the future president of the United States (every mother’s dream) or the next late night stand up comedian?
If he has had a good night, baby Nik wakes up smiling, singing or giggling (I have been serenaded over the baby monitor before).Life itself seems to amuse my boy. I love watching him laugh at himself and the world around him. If the cat walks too close to him, Nik will hit the floor and sit there laughing hysterically as the cat looks on in wonder. If his food is an odd color, you can forget getting sense out of him for at least ten minutes.
I’ll admit they have been times when both my husband and myself have worried for the little guy’s sanity. I mean no one can be that happy right? Nothing is that funny? But it may just be a naturally sunny disposition coupled with the fact that Nik is a very independent only child who enjoys entertaining himself. Well, that’s the story we’re sticking to for now.
At least until we get the test results.
The best thing about it is the fact that baby Nik is very entertaining. If he knows he is making you laugh, he will exaggerate the movement, action or speech to keep you laughing. He loves being laughed at (in the nice way). Right now he is walking up and down the living room carrying his stuffed Elmo toy in his mouth by an eyeball. When Nik noticed I giggled at him, he exaggerated the movement so now Elmo is swinging in his mouth and he is humming as he walks. He loves people laughing.
The worst thing about it is when something is not funny and perhaps dangerous or a matter of misbehaving and Nik needs to be spoken to in a serious tone. He’ll put his head down and push out that bottom lip. Then, a few seconds later his face begins to twitch as the smile and laughing eyes try to break through. He cocks his head to one side and says “mama” in a very ‘come on mom, you know you want to smile” tone and I have to work hard to keep it together.
So the older Nik gets the more he becomes like himself; just like all of us. Maybe I should forget my hopes of Mother’s Day lunches on the White House lawn and start thinking about backstage passes at the Apollo. Well, as long as he’s happy right?
Yeah, that one isn’t difficult.
