The Unstoppable Baby Advice for the Pregnant

No matter how many babies you have or how many times you have been pregnant the majority of women will talk to you like you have never done this baby thing before. As news spreads around my small town of my unexpected pregnancy the advice has begun flooding in. And I don’t know about you but biting my lip, smiling and walking away will only happen for so long. I too am guilty of the unwanted pregnancy advice. I think we all are. So what are some of the worst I’ve had so far?

In my case because everyone knew I only wanted to have one child, the number of folks who once supported me in that decision are now saying: “Well, Nik needs someone to share his childhood with” and “Well I didn’t want to say before but this will be so much better for Nik” and “I bet Nik’s excited about a sibling seeing as his parents don’t seem to be.” Ouch.

Another very annoying angle is the everything will be alright this time advice. Most folks know my history and assure me that this baby will be perfectly healthy and I have nothing to worry about and they can feel it in their bones so don’t worry. I had similar advice right before my first miscarriage and just a week before my son was stillborn. This one gets me the most. Moms are moms but they are not genetic counselors or pediatricians.

The amount of folks who look at me like I’m terrible because I say I’d prefer another boy is astounding. Someone even said “you have to have a girl because then you’ll have a complete set.” I didn’t realize that children were akin to collectible china.

Being pregnant surrounded by parents is tougher than you think. And you know in your heart that all of that advice is meant in a good way and that the person delivering it doesn’t know how many times you’ve heard the same thing that week. So hang on for a few more months. As soon as you get to the huge stage, people are more astounded that you can still walk, especially when you are five foot two with a ten pound baby inside you. I assure you that can finally make a lot of folks speechless.
